Across Australia every years hundreds of environmental groups – professional, grassroots, local, national – are running climate change campaigns to try and reduce our carbon emissions. Some of these campaigns work to create policy change or bring in a carbon emissions trading scheme. Some campaigns work to encourage and support individuals to switch to clean energy providers. And some campaigns work to stop projects driving increased emissions such as new coal or coal seam gas mines.
Despite the hundreds of campaigns and many thousands of people active in them, we still do not know whether which campaigns are successful. To help with this work our team identified over 80 climate change groups in 2017 and analysed the outcomes of the 54 campaigns they were running 2 years later in 2018. We identified the goal of each campaign, the target, the location and the outcome.
The storymap below presents what we found. It shows that environmental groups are achieving high levels of success. Climate change campaigns are successful, and can successfully generate change. Watch the storymap to find out more.
