Project Description

Evolution of a movement

In 2017 a review of Australian environmental groups was undertaken by researchers. By searching online databases, environmental group links and social media connections a dataset of around 2,800 potential environmental groups was found. After reviewing each group, 497 groups active on environmental issues and engaged in environmental campaigning were found.

Once the dataset was created, an extensive review of each of the 497 websites was undertaken. This review identified what issues each group focused on, the campaigns they ran, their location and their age.

We then mapped each group on QGIS along with the group’s founding year. Using the QGIS time manager plugin we created a timelapse of the emergence of these groups between 1883 and 2016. Click on the video on the right to view the results.
