The Australian Wildlife Protection Council AWPC is a nonprofit charity founded in 1969 by Arthur Queripel and incorporated in 1981. Arthur remembers seeing smouldering piles of mallee scrub and mounds of dead kangaroos and emus following the round ups after clearing. He sought help from the police, conservation and animal welfare organisations to no avail, with each passing the responsibility to the other. Finally in desperation he set up AWPC, the aim of which is to protect our native animals from cruelty and exploitation, for their own sake, for their intrinsic worth and because they are unique and special.

The AWPC Executive consists of a President Peter Hylands, Secretary Carmen Ryan and Treasurer Maria Taylor. Anyone is welcome to contribute. Meetings are held six times a year and the committee comes up for reelection at the AGM annually.

AWPC established the National Kangaroo Campaign in 1992 which has grown to incorporate the wider International Community. AWPC coordinates many Campaigns to bring an end to the commercial kangaroo killing industry. The Kangaroo especially, in this country is under enormous pressure from both the commercial kangaroo industry and the rural sector and it needs as much support as it can get for its very survival in its home land. Take a look around this site and if you can help in any way our kangaroos and other wildlife that are under threat then you will have made a valuable contribution to our beautiful and unique Australian fauna. By doing so will help ensure they are still here for future generations of Australians. We believe our wildlife has intrinsic value to our heritage, culture and environment and we seek to dispel misconceptions, educate and be a voice for all our native species.

We are actively engaged in the revisions and consultation of wildlife legislation, the opposition of wildlife exploitation and advocate for wildlife rescuers and shelters.
