Climate Action Newcastle CAN was established on the 1st August 2006 by a small group of concerned Newcastle citizens who came together after a call out by Vicki Brooke to talk about the impacts and concerns of climate change. The meeting was held in the Joy Cummings Centre on the corner of Scott Pacific Streets Newcastle and with Vicki at the helm, an organisation and committee was created that is Climate Action Newcastle Inc, better known as CAN.
CAN is a notforprofit and nonaligned community group of people from all walks of life working to educate and empower the community to take action on climate change. We develop and promote climate change solutions to households, government and industry. The members of CAN are committed local residents from all backgrounds working together to address the single biggest issue facing humanity Climate Change. We are volunteers who recognise that the world faces a crisis. Climate change is a global emergency. The urgency to act cannot be understated. CAN is a way for all of us to be a part of the solution.
CAN has also given a large group of individuals a real handson organisation to work with while either studying and completing a variety of Climate Change and Environmental studies at University or employed in positions that support the environment in some way. Most have gone on to be young leaders in their fields of study and some are now real instigators of policy ideas and change in Australia.
We are a community based nonpartypolitical group of volunteers who recognise that the world faces a crisis. Climate change is a global emergency. The urgency to act simply cannot be understated. CAN is here for people of all walks of life to be a part of the solution.
Our goals are:
To motivate community to take action towards a clean energy future
To be a trusted local voice on climate change issues
To achieve measurable outcomes towards reduction of carbon emissions
To sustain and grow CAN as an inclusive membership organisation. (sourced from website 31/10/2021)
